Synopsis

Delia Dreenan flees after witnessing her mother’s bestial rape and murder at the hands of her father, only to endure even more unimagineable horrors, as she journeys through Ireland ravaged by the Great Famine. Haunted by nightmarish images, she endures much suffering and hardship as she struggles to escape her past and overcome the constant threat of starvation. She is rescued on the point of death by members of the Irish aristocracy and, whilst living in ‘the big house’, forms a close bond with the couple's daughter,Magdalen. There is further tragedy when the ‘strangling angel' claims the child, and Delia is plagued once more by a need to escape. She decides to leave Ireland forever and, with the help of her benefactors, she sails to begin a new life in America.She is robbed of her travel documents on the quayside in Liverpool and a young sailor, (Daniel) comes to her aid and takes her to lodge with his family. They marry and are blissfully happy, until one day Daniel's touch inadvertently triggers a nightmare and Delia flees from him in hysteria. The resulting estrangement threatens to tear them apart and, at risk of losing him, she wrestles with the impossible dilemma of confessing her dark secrets, at risk of losing the man she loves, or withholding them at risk of her sanity.
