A Distortion of Reality is a reality of a different kind; But whose reality? Yours? Mine? Ours? Theirs? There are three main characters with no character names or gender specifications and others with only employment titles or status in the Party for identification. There are even hints that the species may not be human, or perhaps a mutation of the people we are at this time. I leave it strictly up to the reader’s imagination. Each time someone reads this book, the characters will be different. Depending on the readers involved imagination to include height, weight, hair, and eye color. The characters’ mode of speech, accents and mannerisms will also be dictated by what mood the reader may be in. There are several locations for the setting although exactly where or when, in the universe, it is not specified. We have the main characters apartments, offices and an extended business facility which includes dining areas as well as living quarters. There are scenes of meetings and romantic interludes in park like settings, dining areas and walking along streets. Meetings are held in the auditorium. One of those meetings was an open voting forum. One of the audience voted against the party leader and that unlucky, disloyal one was promptly escorted by the “polece” to the stage and executed. It was also at this time when one of the crowd started shouting “They are coming!” putting the entire audience into pandemonium. This is a time and place where the lies, cheating, and truths played out by the characters are often merged into one blur. Not knowing what to believe anymore or if you are coming or going. The time of day becomes irrelevant as confusion fills the main characters’ mind, leaving self-doubt and confusion in its wake. Where being a follower is the norm and any deviation from what is expected would cause one great pain or even death due to the beatings and punishments dispensed by the Party. There are no individuals rights that are not ‘given’ by the Party, if anyone feels that they have been treated unfairly (and it is best not to make these feelings or thoughts known) there are no avenues for retaliation. The only results from a complaint would be severe punishment or most probably death by public execution. The only way to survive in this world is to follow any and all demands by superiors or the Party Hierarchy immediately and without any hesitation. The story line also entails numerous encounters of passion, adultery and betrayal between the main characters. Even a time when one character is executed or so you would think. The three main characters’ lives intertwine throughout the novel, first becoming lovers, then enemies, then lovers. The primary character has several romantic encounters, not only with the other two main characters, but with others as well, where personal pleasures are real - or are they? While in a hospital, after receiving an I.V., the primary character experiences an out of body experience, believes that during a dream, sees the other two being intimate only to find out much later that it was no dream. While the primary character is undergoing extensive physical therapy an affair is started with the therapist and at the same time the current lover has a brief interlude with a nurse.
