Praise from Readers for this edition

  • I was delighted to find your book on the area on Amazon before our visit earlier this month.

  • We went to Arezzo a few years ago, but this time, armed with guidebook we visited again. I wanted to let you know how helpful the book was. I had not noticed the bas-reliefs on the barrel vault of the main door of Pieve Santa Maria or visited the Museo Ivan Bruschi before, let alone the Telecommunications Museum which, like you, we stumbled on unexpectedly.

  • I just finished your book and wanted to tell you I enjoyed it very much. I am planning to go to the Tuscany area next June for a wedding and it gave me a lot of usual information. Because of your book I plan on setting up shop in Arezzo for a few days.

  • I have your guide books which have been very useful.

About the Author

What is my experience?

My family and I have been traveling around Italy since 1992 learning the towns, sites, foods, language, and culture. I have a wealth of cousins in Foiano della Chiana in Tuscany (my maternal grandparents emigrated to the US at the turn of the 20th century) They give me a unique perspective that only a family can provides showing me sites and restaurants that other writers miss, taking me to festivals of food (sagre) and celebrations, and teaching me how to "act Italian" -- well, they try.

What makes my books different?

I realized that no one needs another guide about the major sites of Tuscany, there are dozens, so my focus is on the lesser known gems -- the things that a first time visitor misses and that a repeat visitor wants to see. The sites that other guidebooks cover in 30 words or less. Places and things that help one understand better the art culture of Tuscany. I also began to add "extras" to the books: background, history, recipes from my Italian family, and stories about the culture and people.

Trying to teach an old dog new tricks.

To communicate with the family I had to learn Italian, only a few spoke any English, and that was limited. After 20 years of off-and-on studying I get by pretty well. I spend at least two weeks of every trip studying in an intensive Italian language school, which is great fun and exercise for an old mind. My favorite school is in Arezzo: La Cultura Italiana Arezzo.
