Selected in high school most likely to succeed, I achieved that several times, as a journalist and freelance writer, public relations consultant, and as the owner and executive of a public affairs firm. I also failed at least that often, sometimes in the same areas. Time is short for success as a writer of fiction, but not unmanageable. After graduating from Yale and completing army service as a Russian interpreter, I attended graduate school at UC Berkeley in journalism. I have lived and worked since the mid-sixties in the San Francisco Bay Area. Retiring in 1995, I now live on the Luther Burbank farm in Sebastopol, a town 50 miles north of SF in horse and wine country.
