'The Prodigal Prophet' is a Forrest Gump-like account of a simple man in search of a pure faith among the Christian sects of Northern Ireland, the British mainland and North America during the latter half of the twentieth century and beyond. As a satire it is hard to beat. It is spell-binding, head-shakingly absurd, comic, caustic and tragic - a see-saw of hopes raised and hopes dashed. But it is not a satire. It is what really happened to Dylan Morrison, a fervent, credulous man in search of a Christian integrity worthy of his faith. It's lessons stretch far further than the narrow confines of present day Christian observance. They apply to anyone in search of spiritual solutions who hopes to find them at the feet of a guru. A Christian churchman may be the ultimate oxymoron, but the spiritual Spiritualist isn't far behind. Dylan finally comes to the conclusion that leaders need followers, and followers need leaders, and in that co-dependency lies the problem. From now on his allegiance is to Spirit alone. Nevertheless, over the course of his journey, he has experienced many strange and miraculous phenomena from speaking in tongues, to prophesies that have come elliptically to pass, to collapsing in the presence of the Spirit. He has lost a son and been saved by another. Redemption treads a winding path.

When The Prodigal Prophet was published back in February 2011 I genuinely had no idea who might read it. Nearly three years on I'm now a wee bit clearer as to the nature of its readership. Many who have passed through an organised faith group, be it religious or spiritual, only to awaken to a deeper and more intimate personal spirituality appear to make up the bulk of my readers. Some are victims of spiritual abuse, that elephant in the room which many still involved within the confines of traditional faith groups chose not to acknowledge. Others are those who have genuinely outgrown their initial spiritual world views by listening to and respecting the views of others outside their particular tradition. Occasionally, those with a seeking heart but no previous religious or psycho-spiritual baggage are drawn into my tale of Divine encounter, one that resonates with their inner longings to know and be known.

The feedback from my readers via social media and face to face discussion has encouraged me that I was not off my trolly back in 2009 when a gentle inner Voice prompted me to write my little pilgrimage tale, with its heady mix of joy, tragedy and renewed trust. Many worldwide have similar tales to tell; painful yet ultimately encouraging stories of cultic withdrawal and Divine healing. It is for those that I continue to write and offer this second edition as a tool to bring hope and healing in the midst of darkness.
