Chavez L. Brown was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina and raised, along with two siblings, in Baltimore, MD. Candia Oliver, his mother, nurtured Chavez’s gift as a writer since he was a “little boy” & encouraged him to share his capabilities to the world. He often wrote persuasive letters, cards, poems & short stories to compensate unaffordable holiday gifts. On December 25, 2004, Chavez inscribed individual Christmas poems for his immediate family triggered laughter, tears & unexpected praise securing a pivotal moment for the young writer. In 2006, Chavez became a member of the popular social network, Myspace, where he expressed himself through pictures, short notes, & most importantly, poetry. He received countless amounts of positive feedback with each post & he realized writing intrigued him to convey any emotion he could not express verbally. From angry tones to pleasurable moods to inspirational journeys, no subject was exempt from the young writers’ appeal. Later that year, his next door neighbor, Raven Ekundayo, informed Chavez about an online magazine, eXcape the matriX, he created & queried the youngster to join the team. Preliminary as a music columnist, Chavez would write album reviews & conduct interviews with underground/ well-known artists such as Shaze, Teedra Moses, the Jaspects & Baltimore’s own, Wish. In 2008, he tread away from his comfort zone and stepped into the role as the Youth Director for the “Future” section, which geared towards adolescents 13-21. The same year, Chavez challenged himself by applying for a creative writing class & found interest in fiction. After receiving honest feedback from classmates, the class allowed him to realize fiction was more inspiring & thought-provoking than anything he has ever written. The transition was complicated, but the awareness an author has the power to transport a reader to another place with their choice of words or failing to do it at all made the journey worthwhile. At the end of 2009, Chavez began work on his first novel tentatively entitled “Nice Guys Don’t Finish Last”. Early 2011, Chavez decided to take matters into his own hands when he grew tired of rejection from publishing companies & literary agents who consistently gave him the “Thanks but No Thanks” response. He acquired the self-publishing route, and spun his creativity into reality. "Nice Guys" was released October 2011.
