Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Hardcover, xiv + 215 pages, b&w photos in text, NOT ex-library. Clean and bright interior with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps; firm secure binding. Boards show gentle shelfworn marks and scratches, small indentations, short creases to spine ends. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Responding to a renewed interest in the growing problem of iodine deficiency worldwide, Drs. Charles Oxnard and Peter Obendorf, along with experienced translator and anatomist John Dennison, take a fresh look at the classic text, Der endemische Kretinismus, published in 1936 by Springer. Translated here for the first time into English, this landmark text will be a welcome resource for researchers confronting the problem of iodine deficiency. Oxnard and Obendorf point out that there is very little detailed knowledge or numerical data on cretinism available in the English-speaking world. In addition, highly-renowned Professor Basil S. Hetzel, recently-retired World Health Organization Chairman of the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, published in 2009 with Dr Chen Zu-pei on the resurgence of iodine deficiency in China. Indeed, throughout the entire developing world there may be as many as two billion people at risk to iodine deficiency; perhaps three quarters of a billion have goiter, and ten million may be cretins. Even in developed countries, iodine deficiency is re-emerging (as in New South Wales in 19% of children) with the result of significantly reduced numbers of gifted children (though this is not cretinism per se). Certain to be of significant interest to a wide range of researchers, health providers and professionals, including government health administrators, this English translation of Endemic Cretinism is a major contribution to the literature. -- Contents: 1 Etymology of the Word 'Cretin'; 2 Definition; 3 Historical; 4 Epidemiology [Statistics; Geographical Distribution (Europe; Asia; Australia; Africa; America); Racial Affinity; Relation to Endemic Goitre]; 5 Course and Clinical Pattern of Cretinism [Sexual Distribution of Cretinism; Behaviour of Physical Development (Individual Parts of the Skeleton; Skin and its Appendages; Musculature; Behaviour of the Endocrine Glands; Intestinal Tract and its Glands; Blood Vascular System; Nervous System); Intellectual Behaviour of Cretins]; 6 Pathological Anatomy and Histology [Thyroid Gland; Parathyroid Glands; Thymus; Hypophysis; Pineal Gland; Suprarenal Glands; Gonads (Male & Female Gonads); Nervous System (Meninges; Brain; Spinal Cord; Peripheral Nerves); Musculature; Skeleton (Development; Bone Form Relationships; Upper & Lower Limbs); Joints; Teeth; Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue; Ear; Circulatory System (Capillaries); Blood and Blood-Forming Organs; Respiratory Organs; Digestive Organs (Tongue; Stomach and Intestine; Salivary Glands; Pancreas; Liver; Gall Bladder; Peritoneum); Urinary System; Further Anatomical Findings; Lifespan and Diseases of Cretins; Cretinism in Animals (Histological Finding); Summary]; 7 Pathological Physiology; 8 Pathogenesis; 9 Prophylaxis and Treatment of Cretinism [Goitre Surgery in Cretins; Goitre and Cancer]; Appendix A Cretinism Revisited: The View from 2010 A.1 Studies in Papua New Guinea A.1.1 Clinical Features of Endemic Cretinism A.1.2 Clinical Manifestations A.1.3 Animal Models A.1.4 Spectrum of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) A.1.5 Global Program of Elimination of Brain Damage due to IDD; References; Index.
