In the last fifteen years, the development of human hearing has been explored extensively, using electrophysiological, psychophysical, and anatomical methods. Werner and Marean survey this work, revealing what is and is not known about hearing changes during infancy and childhood and discussing the mechanisms that account for age-related change in several domains of auditory processing. Werner and Marean also place human auditory development in the broader context of vertebrate auditory development. They provide an accessible review of nonhuman auditory development and suggest a common developmental time frame for humans and nonhumans.Richly illustrated with numerous cross-sectional diagrams, electron micrographs, tables, and charts, the book contains a comprehensive yet succinct overview of hearing” development.
