LORE of the GHOST SHIP by Cristina Montalva set on the Chilean Archipelago of Chiloe draws on local folk-lore and tradition to create a magical realistic fable filled with color, action and human depth. The story opens with Pancho and his father, Agustin, in mourning for Pancho's mother, who disappeared a month before while collecting shellfish. Agustin is steadily drinking himself into the bottom of a bottle to overcome his grief, while Pancho searches for meaning and a way to understand the loss of his mother. Critical to his search is Mateo, his father's brother, a large than life character versed in the mythology of the island. Mateo's narration, to Pancho's of the Ghost Ship, a legendary vessel which haunts the waters around the Archipelago is central to the plot, and it is on the basis of this story-telling that Pancho's final resolution occurs. Agustin, who goes out every night to look for his wife, is swept away and ends up on the Ghost Ship. Pancho going to find him, is also swept away, and arrives at the same place. While Agustin has already become a spirit, however, Pancho escapes, finds his way back to Chiloe, and comes up with a plan to free the souls trapped on the Ghost Ship. The islanders follow an ancient ritual and, using Pancho's ideas, carry out a ceremony which releases the spirits trapped on the ship. Pancho is reunited with his mother and father one last time before they go to heaven.
