Danny Miranda was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at the age of 18. His mother Ana chronicles his long journey toward recovery, as well as her own journey toward acceptance and hope. Fighting Mad has two purposes. The first is to help individuals suffering from a mental illness and those who love them navigate the practical and emotional rapids they experience in seeking effective help. The second goal is to provide physicians and other health-care providers with up-to-date information about the impact of mental illness on individuals and families, and the effect of a broken mental health system on those who depend on it for healing and hope. “In tracing the steps of Danny's journey," says Ana, "I try to be completely honest in describing his experiences and their impact on all of us. Ana Miranda (a pen name) holds a PhD in a discipline in the humanities and has taught at several universities in the Midwest and along the eastern seaboard. She and her family have lived in the Boston area since 1999. Ana writes and lectures within her academic specialty, and is a widely sought-after speaker on motherhood, the vocation of women, and the life issues. She has been an active member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness since 2007, and helped to found a support group for people of faith who suffer from mental illness, in their own lives or in the lives of those they love. This is her first book, undertaken as a labor of love in the hope that others who are on the same journey will find in Danny's story a source of understanding, encouragement, and strength.
