From life in a maze, to an amazing life best describes De’Juan “DJ” Verrett. On February 6, 1990 DJ Verrett was arrested on drug charges at the age of 19, and was sentenced to 19 ½ years of imprisonment. After serving 16 years 10 months and three day in some of America’s most notorious federal prisons DJ Verrett was released on November 1, 2006. The day he was released DJ Verrett made the decision to change everything about him. He immediately began to give back to the community by volunteering his time with an organization called “GETTING OUT BY GOING IN” (G.O.G.I) and through this program; he began to work with “At-Risk Youth and Adults” to encourage and influence them not to make the same poor life choices he had made. During his time of association with (G.O.G.I.), he has spoken at numerous events that focus on Youth Awareness/ Empowerment, Drug /Alcohol Prevention and Gang Prevention. DJ Verrett also spearheaded a unique after school program which taught students how to crochet while slipping in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The crocheting exercise taught the students about focus and concentration, thereby applying these same principles to their normal classes. For his outstanding volunteer work DJ Verrett was acknowledged and given an Award of Appreciation by the Inglewood Unified School District and Inglewood’s Former Mayor Roosevelt Dorn. DJ was also a major contributor to the book, “Prison, Getting Out by Going In, Freedom before Release” by Mara Leigh Taylor, published by Lightning Source Inc. You can also find DJ’s story in the New York Times Bestseller “Moments of Clarity” by Christopher Kennedy Lawford published by Harper Collins Inc. On December 24, 2008 DJ Verrett received an early Christmas gift via the United States District Court by the request of his probation officer. The same judge that sentenced DJ to 19 ½ years of imprisonment witnessed the power of this transformation and terminated his probation four years early. On April 19, 2010 DJ received an Award of Appreciation from Lee Baca of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department for his outstanding volunteer work in working with male and female inmates as well as juvenile wards of the state. “Come as you are, but don’t leave as you came” is DJ’s message, whether it’s in the many schools where he speaks, or jails.
