The most defining moment of my life came at a very early age. At age 10, my mother, my older sister, Lea, and I were already behind the wall in the Ghetto. At 12, my sister and I were taken to Birkenau, a transitional camp where decisions were made, placing people either in labor camps, or transporting people to the gas chambers of Auschwitz for extermination. I did not know what awaited me there; only that it was not good. Lea and I would go every day around noon to the communal soup kitchen for our daily ration. It wasn't very good. More than once I would barely taste it, then I could not even eat it anymore. I became emaciated and that may have been the reason I was put in the line for the gas chamber as an "undesirable." The line was very long . . . people were pushing, shoving and crying. Many whips came down on our heads. I just stood there, unable to move, daydreaming about being reunited with my mother and my aunt, and being pushed along with the crowd. Suddenly a hand shot out of nowhere and pulled me out of that line and placed me in the same line with my sister-the one headed for the labor camps. To this day, I do not know who that person was, but they saved my life. At that moment, I vowed to never give up, no matter what awaited me. I would be a fighter to the bitter end, not just for myself, but also for my sister. I fought back, and fought hard. There had to be a reason I was saved from the gas chamber. I am still searching for the answer. Perhaps, I had to adopt my oldest daughter Tina, watching her and her husband raise her children, and enjoy my grandchildren, Cameron and Ashley. Perhaps I had to give birth to my younger daughter Jacqueline, witness another grandchild, Elishai. Jacqueline is today an Ordained Rabbi, as is her husband Scott, and is teaching in an orphanage, and works with autistic children.
