Synopsis

The Almost Christian Discovered is drawn from seven sermons Matthew Mead preached at St. Sepulchre's, London, in 1661. His theme was that many in the world who profess the Christian faith are almost, but only almost, true Christians. They are not fully Christian. He demonstrates the ways in which they miss the mark and shows what we can learn from their errors. "Labor to be altogether Christians," he urges the reader, "to go farther than they who have gone farthest and yet fall short!"

Biographie de l'auteur

Matthew Mead (1630–1699) was an English Independent minister. Mead succeeded John Owen in September 1683 as one of the Tuesday morning lecturers (presbyterian and congregational) at the merchants' lecture in Pinners' Hall. Pleading there on one occasion on behalf of poor ministers, he got a collection of £300., ladies putting their rings and watches into the plates. In 1686 he was again in Holland, preaching at Utrecht; he returned on King James's declaration for liberty of conscience in 1687.
