A young woman is haunted by a 35-digit number that comes to her in a dream. A man survives a vampire attack but can’t overcome his survivor guilt. The reader meets despair incarnate, finds an unlikely hero in the easiest of targets, and watches a girl slowly piece together the puzzle that is the monster inside her. Combination Lock and Other Stories is told in a mixture of written media, from blog posts and journal entries to medical reports and newspaper stories, mixed in with the occasional outburst of straight-ahead narrative. Each tale keeps the reader’s heart pounding with suspense as the characters draw closer and closer to self-discovery… and all the perils that can come from finding out who you really are. Sometimes dark, sometimes funny but always intense, Combination Lock and Other Stories is not for the faint of heart. But the amount of heart contained within may be a surprise.

The biggest moment in Patrick Vaughn’s youth took place in a classroom at Sierra Vista Middle School. It was the day Mrs. Clark assigned his 7th grade English class to write a short story. Sparks flashed in his brain: vampires. Vampires that don’t want to be vampires. He dashed home to write a wild tale filled with action, suspense and romance, and has been doing so ever since. As an awkward teen Vaughn could relate to vampires who on the outside look as normal as the humans around them, only inside are something else entirely; it’s a feeling of separation common to adolescents and one Vaughn strives to convey in each of his stories. Vaughn’s fascination with vampires stems from the many metaphors the vampire myths contain, the many ways vampires can tell us about ourselves, reveal more about the human condition. While harassing his high school friends and then college writing instructors with his stories, Vaughn studied to become a broadcast journalist. There’s little doubt that he was the only Electronic Media major at Northern Arizona University attending poetry slams and finishing his second vampire-themed novel. Upon graduation his natural affinity for writing and interest in mass media combined to install him in the radio reporting and deejay profession, but that career would be short-lived. The high pressure and demanding hours of the business gave him little time to pursue his true passion: vampires. Vampires convey his themes in an enormously entertaining way, which works as a vehicle to spread the messages contained in Vaughn’s works to a wide audience, especially young people. His first novel, “The Cure for the Curse”, won the 2007 Arizona Book Award for Best Young Adult/Juvenile Novel, and the sequel (“The Allure of the Curse”) was released in December 2008. A third installment, "The Spiral of the Curse" is due to be released in 2012. He has appeared on the Pat McMahon show and has lectured at high schools throughout Arizona. Vaughn currently resides in El Mirage, Arizona with his wife. He enjoys watching Hell's Kitchen, road trips, movies, and prefers his wife to be at his side for each. He also thoroughly enjoys writing vampire stories. More information can be found at patrickvaughn.net.
