All the while Rachel tries to balance her own need to express herself as a trans woman, with the very real reality of needing to be as masculine as possible to survive her tour on the streets of this remarkable city.

Yet, year after year she perseveres until she, her family and friends and ultimately the world around her, are able to come to terms with her choice of lifestyle. Through Rachelle's eyes we also fall in love with the city that shelters and supports her transition from man to woman. This is as much a story about San Francisco, as it is Rachelle Phillips. The City plays just as important part in her life as any lover does. Through her, we learn the seldom told story of San Francisco's murderous history and its dirty little secrets. You can not tell Rachelle's story without telling San Francisco's. This is no ordinary coming out story. It is a moving and powerful study of human sexuality, gender identity and a passion for living. Unlike Virginia Woolf's Orlando, 56 Sanchez does not glamorize the transition from one sex to another. It is a raw, unadulterated view of sex, drugs and violence that so many people encountered living in The City during the 1980s. It is not always a pleasant journey. Not all roads lead to Disneyland or a warm sandy beach. She stumbles often, and at the worse possible times. Yet through it all, we get to know a person worthy of the title "Explorer" This is a story you can sink your teeth into.
