Mission to Cape Town - Testimony of our Work with AIDS Victims in Africa. When my wife, Thelma, and I (Bill) got married in 2000, our hopes and aspirations were the usual ones: raise a family of God-fearing children, put them through good schools and see them to university till they would be able to stand on their own two feet. But that was not the plan that God had for us. He revealed His will to us in a very strange way.Barely a year after Thelma and I got married, some curious relatives started wondering and asking questions why we were taking long to have children. Is there something wrong with either of you? Why can’t you see a doctor? Some of them even had the audacity to suggest that we should consult a witch-doctor and went on to give examples of some people they knew who had been assisted by some witch doctors in the past. Thelma and I chose to ignore all this, insisting that children come from God and He was going to bless us with wonderful children at His own time. Two years in our marriage, I opted to resign from the mining company where I worked as auto-electrician in the small mining town of Chingola some good six hours north-west of Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. With a bit of money that I got as terminal benefits, I pursued a creative writers’ course with The Writers’ Bureau of UK. In no time I teamed up with friends and formed Zambia National Youth Network – a non-governmental organisation dealing with youth and child related issues. This would constantly bring me in contact with challenges faced by a number of children living on the streets.“You can do something about the plight of all these less fortunate children,” I could hear the voice of the Lord urging me each time I came across some street kids. Before we knew it, Thelma and I were selling our household goods, cleaning our savings, leaving our home and taking a plunge into the unknown – much to the chagrin of our family and friends! After three months of discipleship training in South Africa, God would reveal to us the purposes and plans He had for us – to be parental figure-heads to a number of children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in our community. The journey has been an arduous one; on our own strength, we would have probably faltered along the way and thrown in the towel when the heat got too hot for us! But we thank God for His goodness and everlasting mercies – He continuously filled our tanks with sufficient faith, hope and perseverance to enable us get where we are today. This is our testimony: Mission to Cape Town - Testimony of our Work with AIDS Victims in Africa.
