The Secret Agent was a rare non-nautical novel for Joseph Conrad. Based in part on the Greenwich Observatory bombing of 1894, this novel depicts terrorism, anarchism, and espionage in a way that is uniquely twentieth century. At the same time, Conrad’s sense of social justice is depicted throughout. There is much to appreciate about The Secret Agent, considered by many to be the first modern novel dealing with terrorism.
