À propos de la deuxième de couverture

Having considered writing an update of Aubrey’s Brief Lives, Mr Key concluded that some books are unimproveable. Instead, he decided to collect a single, unadorned fact about each of his subjects, creating a cornucopia of little nuggets for readers to deploy at the kinds of swish, sophisticated cocktail parties to which they are no doubt invited.

The result is a collection ranging from Richard Nixon’s favourite pastime (mashing potatoes) to Gertrude Stein’s preferred writing method (in the presence of cows), and from the name of Michael Tippett’s refrigerator (‘Bernard Levin’) to George Orwell’s terse diary entries on the subject of eggs.

Also covering historic phenomena such as the Muggletonian sect (who wanted to ban hot air ballooning lest the balloons crash into the sky), Duck Density (who ranked universities on the density of ducks on their lakes) and the Messiah of Gévaudan (a sixth-century man who was driven insane by flies), this is quite possibly the only book you will ever need to own.
