Robert Harland is Reader in Urban Graphic Heritage at Loughborough University, UK, where he leads Urbanism research. His research focuses on how urban environments function through their graphic objects. His first book, Graphic Design in Urban Environments (Bloomsbury, 2016), redefined graphic design as a spatial practice. Before moving into academia, he ran his own graphic design practice, Harland Design.
