Synopsis

Missed trains, terrible language barriers, total cultural confusion, and unexpected philosophical depth. Welcome to the ultimate vintage European road trip.

If you fell in love with the chaotic, bumbling vacation of Three Men in a Boat, Diary of a Pilgrimage is the perfect spiritual successor for your bookshelf. Originally published in 1891, this brilliant volume documents a real-life journey from London to Germany as Jerome and his equally disorganized friend "B." set out to witness the legendary, once-a-decade Passion Play in a remote Bavarian village.

Jerome turns what should be a solemn journey into a masterclass in travel disasters. From surviving a remarkably rough overnight crossing of the English Channel to getting hopelessly lost in foreign train stations, trying to order breakfast with a language barrier, and wrestling with the bizarre mechanics of a German bed, Jerome finds endless humor in the friction of international travel.

Diary of a Pilgrimage is an absolutely joyful, historically rich travel diary that proves that no matter how much technology changes, the hilarious struggles of being a tourist remain exactly the same. It is a warm, witty, and deeply comforting escape for the armchair traveler!

Présentation de l'éditeur

This early work by Jerome K. Jerome was originally published in 1891 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Diary of a Pilgrimage' is a novel set during a journey to Oberammergau, in Bavaria, to see the Passion play that is performed there every ten years. Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall, England in 1859. Both his parents died while he was in his early teens, and he was forced to quit school to support himself. In 1889, Jerome published his most successful and bestremembered work, 'Three Men in a Boat'. Featuring himself and two of his friends encountering humorous situations while floating down the Thames in a small boat, the book was an instant success, and has never been out of print. In fact, its popularity was such that the number of registered Thames boats went up fifty percent in the year following its publication.
