Originally published in 1913, this work contains a catalogue of the manuscripts and other items of interest found in the collection of Mr. Frederick Barker following his death in 1908. They all relate, in some way, to one of Britain's most famous military leaders, Admiral Horatio Nelson.
This work is being republished with a specially commissioned new introductory biography of Nelson.
Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, was a British flag officer in the Royal Navy. He is regarded as a master of naval strategy, winning many decisive victories, most notably during the Napoleonic Wars, at a time when Napoleon's French Empire had conquered much of Europe.
Nelson joined the Royal Navy in 1771, and served as an ordinary seaman under his maternal uncle, Captain Maurice Suckling. Nelson rose through the ranks, and soon began officer training – despite suffering from chronic seasickness. He obtained his own command in 1778.
Following the American War of Independence, Nelson suffered periods of illness and unemployment, but the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars enabled him to return to service, and saw him play an active role in the Mediterranean.
In 1797 he lost his right arm at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but returned the following year to win a decisive victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile.
His most famous victory was his last: defeating Napoleon's navy at the Battle of Trafalgar aboard his ship, the HMS Victory. Nelson was fatally wounded by a sharpshooter at Trafalgar and his body brought back to England for a state funeral. Admiral Lord Nelson is remembered as a legend of the Royal Navy, and has been honoured with numerous monuments, including Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London.
