Synopsis

Alex Kerr’s Wellington recounts the extraordinary wartime experiences of a twin-engine bomber pilot shot down over Germany in 1941. Initially hospitalized with hopes of repatriation, Kerr soon became a prisoner of war, keeping a secret diary throughout four harrowing years of captivity. The book presents his diary entries, offering a vivid, day-to-day portrayal of life in a German POW camp, including the infamous ‘Long March,’ during which 60 prisoners were killed and 100 wounded. Kerr and a comrade ultimately escaped, navigating front lines, seizing a German mayor’s car, and reaching Brussels to return to Allied territory. His account balances tension and danger with wit, charm, and optimism, highlighting the camaraderie among fellow prisoners. From being shot down to enduring forced marches and orchestrating a daring escape, Kerr’s story is a compelling, authentic chronicle of courage in the Second World War.
