The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Among the papers are: Special order of the Day French, G. , G. , , Commander-in-Chief, British Army in the Field; Phase "B": Battle of Arras, April-May 1917. 1st Period-Attack on Vimy Ridge, April.The diary opens at Curragh Co Kildare on 13 August 1914. 1914 is spent at Nr Berthen, Villers, Neuve Eglise, Dranoutre and Near St Jean Capelle. 1915 at Verlincthun, Ledringhem, Ledringham, Berthen and Rolet. 1916 at Rolet, Desvres, Querrieu, Beussent and Courset And Desvres. 1917 at Samer, Robecq, Rolet, Desvres And Courset and Recques. 1918 at Courcelles, Le Ponchel, St. Josse, Tatincloux and Le Mesnil. 1919 at Cologne, Bolheim, Colais and Harff. It closes at Colais on 16 September 1919. Rolet is where it spent longest, 322 days across eleven separate stays, it came back to Querrieu fourteen separate times, and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 184 days at Verlincthun.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Chateau L'Abbaye and Pereuse Chateau.In 1914 it is also recorded at Curragh, Quenstown, Le Havre, Maubeuge, Cusorle, Givry, Quieverant, Jawlain, Near Orsinval and Vertain.
