The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

It names 75 places across 98 dated entries.The diary opens at Petit-Bois-Pihem-Bientques on 20 January 1915. 1915 is spent at Petit-Bois Vieux-Berquin, Grand-Bois Vieux Berquin, Lagorgue, Petit-Bois-Pihem-Bientques and Reninghelst. 1916 at Merck St Lieven, Bonnay, Estrees-les-Crecy, Les Cinq Rues and Borre. 1917 is the most travelled year, 54 places against 21 in the next busiest, and is spent at Marquaix, Estrees-les-Crecy, Henu, Sailly-Labourse and Boucly. 1918 at Caulaincourt and Boucly. It closes at Caulaincourt on 26 February 1918. Estrees-les-Crecy is where it spent longest, 77 days across five separate stays and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 31 days at Merck St Lieven.In 1915 it is also recorded at Vieux-Berquin-Grand Bois.
