What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

It names 93 places across 209 dated entries.The diary opens at Marvilles on 19 December 1914. 1914 is spent at Orleans, Marvilles and In Aruin. 1915 at Nedonchelle, Selincourt, Fontaine-Lez-Hermans, Le Rons and Mazinghem. 1916 is the most travelled year, 80 places against 49 in the next busiest, and is spent at Valines, Douriez, Roellecourt, Cambligneul and Belloy. It closes at Belloy on 31 December 1916. Valines is where it spent longest, 207 days across eight separate stays, it came back to Nedonchelle ten separate times, and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 36 days at Gemenghem.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Fricourt Farm and Serre Sector of Trenches.In 1915 it is also recorded at Clarques, Gemenghem, Therouanne, Marles, Estree Blanche, Estre Blanche, De Roms, Zuytpeene, Houtkerque and Matou Belgium.
