What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

It names 86 places across 118 dated entries.The diary opens at Havre on 11 March 1916. 1916 is spent at Grosville, Suzanne, Vaux En Amienois, Essars and Sailly Laurette. 1917 at Wytschaete, Ypres, Causmes, Gheluvelt and Warluzel. 1918 at Esmery Hallon, Marizeele, Ugny L'Equipee, Douchy and Ebblinghem. It closes at Douchy on 28 February 1918. Grosville is where it spent longest, 72 days across four separate stays, it came back to Ypres eight separate times, and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 32 days at Vaux En Amienois.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Assembly Trenches, Trones Wood, Bernafay Wood & Trones Wood, Bernafay & Trones Wood, Chateau Segard and Loisne Chateau.In 1916 it is also recorded at Corbie, All On Ville, Etinehem Camp, Bray, Mericourt, Etinheim, Heilly, Ailly Sur Somme, Saissemont and Etineham.
