The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

It names 105 places across 158 dated entries.Alongside the daily entries the volume carries three reports, narratives and plans, one appendix and one map. Among the papers are: Raid on enemy trenches night of 18/19th July 1916 Extracts from 119th Inf. Bde. O.O. No 8.The diary opens at Havre on 3 June 1916. 1916 is spent at Loos, S. Maroc, Calonne, Les Brebis and Eaucourt Sur Somme. 1917 is the most travelled year, 74 places against 41 in the next busiest, and is spent at Left Subsector Right Brigade, Gouzeaucourt, Villers-Plouich, Gouy-En-Artois and Lucheux. 1918 at No 2 Camp Blairville, Northumberland Lines Mercatel, Estaires & Fleurbaix, Durham Camp No 2 and Staple. It closes at St Momelin on 17 June 1918. Left Subsector Right Brigade is where it spent longest, 67 days, including a single unbroken stay of 67 and it came back to Gouzeaucourt eight separate times.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Dessart Wood, Villers Plouich Pinesight Suffers Trenches, Cross Roads North Of Judas Farm and Dessart Wood Nr Fins.In 1916 it is also recorded at Lillers, S Hilaire Cottes, N.
