What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Among the papers are: Instructions for Embussing.The diary opens at Cromer on 5 May 1918. 1918 is the most travelled year, 37 places against 8 in the next busiest, and is spent at Estree-Cauchie, Hamet Billets, Laires, Thumesnil and Toufflers. 1919 is spent at Dunkirk, Beaumarais, Barlin, Wallon Capel and Marseilles. It closes at H.T. Malwa on 31 May 1919. Dunkirk is where it spent longest, 57 days across three separate stays and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 51 days at Beaumarais.In 1918 it is also recorded at Dover, Calais, Bours, Hestrus, Bertrencourt, Mercatel, Barley, Bretencourt, Saulty and Bourecq.
