The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

It names 78 places across 112 dated entries.Alongside the daily entries the volume carries one report or narrative, two Operation Orders and one defence scheme. Among the papers are: Time Table to Be Used in Connection with Barrage Table.The diary opens at Huppy on 1 June 1916. 1916 is spent at Souchez II, Le Champneut, Engle Belmer, Beugin and Champneut. 1917 is the most travelled year, 60 places against 38 in the next busiest, and is spent at Spring Garden Camp, Beaucourt, Helsthaege, Etricourt and Road Camp. 1918 at Barastre, Nelson Camp [Havrincourt Wood, In The Line-La. Vacquerie Sector and Metz. It closes at Barastre on 23 February 1918. Le Champneut is where it spent longest, 37 days across three separate stays, it came back to Engle Belmer six separate times, and the longest it stayed anywhere without moving was 26 days at Spring Garden Camp.Trench and battlefield features named in the diary include Old German Trenches, Noulette Wood, Old Roman Trenches G.b.6, Naval Trench and Havrincourt Wood.In 1916 it is also recorded at En Route, Verdrel, Hersin, Camblain Chatelain, Coupigny Fosse 10, Aix Noulette, Sovehez II, Bois De Noulette, Ablain St Nazaire and Lorette Spur.
