In this book, Robuck, a world class storyteller equaling Sam Watkins of Company Aytch, relates his observations and experiences as a medical student in Philadelphia and life in Mississippi in the days before the war. After the war begins, Robuck shares his experiences as a Confederate soldier in General Edward C. Walthall's brigade, Army of Tennessee. Robuck concludes his story with experiences and observations from his life in post-war, reconstruction Mississippi. In addition to his experiences and observations, Robuck appends an interesting history of the original Ku Klux Klan as it existed in the South from 1866-1869.

J. E. Robuck was born on October 19, 1837 in Marshall County Mississippi. Robuck joined the Confederate Army in March 1862 at Oxford Mississippi. He was a member of the "Lafayette Rifles," Company A, 29th Mississippi Infantry. In the twilight of his life, Robuck, almost destitute and having no family, became a resident of the Jefferson Davis Memorial Confederate Soldier's Home at Beauvoir, Mississippi. While residing there he wrote The Life Story of Archie McDonald and this volume, which he sold to support himself until his death in 1913.
