An innocent man is killed in a violent accident and three of the witnesses have been changed irrevocably. Sarah, a young woman who grew up in poverty and ignorance, examines her life, sees it more clearly and critically than ever before, and makes some major decisions that will put her on an unfamiliar path. Jacob, who has been teaching high school as research for his doctoral dissertation, questions everything he has or has not done since he was a child as he tries to justify his existence. Taylor, a seasoned war reporter on vacation at the time of the accident, keeps himself aloof until a second accident forces him to face his own mortality. These three, former strangers, find their lives intertwining and connecting. At the center of their new relationships is Lonnie, the widow of the innocent man, who privately questions her ability to cope with the new reality of her life while inspiring the others with her inner spiritual strength.
