This is a diary of the life and career of an electrical engineer who was born November 16, 1930 in Lexington, KY. It tells of many incidents from childhood through teenhood, followed by descriptions of positions held as a practicing engineer, and co-workers. His career caused him to reside in New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and return to South Carolina for retirement.

The author thrived on public schools for twelve years in Lexington, KY and then earned his BSEE at the University of Kentucky in the same city in 1951. UK had taught him about the use of vacuum tubes in radios and amplifiers. Shortly they went the way of the horse and buggy, replaced by transistors and microchips. Talk about obsolescence. He spent the next ten years with Bell Telephone Labs in NJ - the most rewarding time of his career, in a variety of ways. While there he was awarded an MS in Solid State Physics (Stevens Institute of Technology-Hoboken, NJ) to help him tackle semiconductor devices. In BTL clubs, he enjoyed Barber Shop Quartet singing as well as the Men’s Glee Club. In the evenings, he learned to draw and paint from a master illustrator, Carroll Jones, Jr. His spare time was spent sharpening his engineering skills, developing telephone circuit components. He offers tales of childhood in the Great Depression - school days in harmonica bands for kids who could not buy other instruments; of street games; of life on the farm as well as in the city. He tells of life on the home front during World War 2 - with rationing of meat, sugar, gasoline; with no new cars and no new tires or tubes; collecting scrap metal and old papers for the war effort. If you are too young to retire, you may find unfamiliar territory here.
