“Greasy the Robber” is an old-fashioned story of a family of Russian immigrants on their way to Siberia. The parents succumb to cholera, leaving the two children, Shura and 8 year old Pasha, to fend for themselves. Pasha escapes from the orphanage in which he is placed and is picked up by a band of robbers, living with them and learning their ways. At 16 years of age, Greasy (as the robbers call Pasha) helps kill two Christian travelers. In the stolen loot, the robbers find a New Testament which Greasy begins to read. Moved by the words he reads, Greasy reads the New Testament to the whole gang. The effect of the book was so powerful that the entire gang is convicted by the Word of God. Seven of the robbers, including Greasy, decide that they would like to right the wrongs they have committed. Knowing that they can never pay back all the things they have stolen or restore the lives taken, they decide that their best option is to turn themselves in to the authorities. The authorities are so impressed by the testimony of the robbers that they decide to read the Bible for themselves and some are converted. Meanwhile the robbers, who are sentenced to years of hard labor for their crimes, share the good news of the gospel with them wherever they go. Though a relatively short book, there is much more to the story of “Greasy the Robber.” His love for his younger sister, the persecution he suffers as a result of his faith, and his faithful witness for Christ after conversion promise to be inspirational for readers of all ages.

Charles Lukesh was a missionary of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Chile, South America, before his transfer to his native country, Czechoslovakia, in connection with the American-European Fellowship. His wide ministry there was stopped in the sixteenth year with the occupation by the Nazi forces, of which he experienced almost six months. After World War II he returned to Czechoslovakia. This practical contact in Europe vouches for the story he translated.
