During his hitchhiking days, Don Fred worked as a clay potter, janitor, night auditor, waiter, aluminum sider, marina attendant, cook, taxi driver, college instructor, and fruit picker. He lived in five states. Eventually, he settled in Atlanta, but he left in June, 1990, in a rusty 1973 Pontiac. He had no prospects for employment. He was, after all, going to become a successful writer. Fred knew of evidence that implicated government officials in the May 4, 1970, shooting at Kent State University, which killed four students and wounded nine. His knowledge became an obsession and then a novel, Piscazzis Pizza, which is concerned with a newspaper columnist who, in the course of his fictional daily work, acquires the same Kent State shooting evidence that Fred has acquired.
