Patrick Richard Carstens was born in Woodstock, South Africa, and raised and educated in Canada. He is semi-retired, with a military and engineering background and with training in the field of archaeology. He has worked in the Egyptian Delta, Sinai Peninsula, and Luxor with a number of archaeological teams and has been a frequent visitor to Egypt since 1982 His interest in writing about Port Nolloth and the adjacent mining towns in Namaqualand dates back to 1990. During that summer, he visited his third-cousin, Peter Carstens, who, with wife Chantal Carstens, was also visiting the area. Peter Carstens, son of Jack Carstens, grew up in the neighbouring town of Kleinzee. During the writing of The Carstens Family in South Africa (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1988), Patrick discovered that he and Peter shared a common history in Namaqualand. As a historian with an interest in both ancient and modern history, Patrick has written The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Egypt (under review), contributed to the volume Ancient Egypt: Foundations of a Civilization (London: Pearson Longman, 2005), and, most recently, co-authored, with Timothy L. Sanford, Searching for the Forgotten War B 1812: Volume 1 B Canada, and Volume 2 B United State of America (Bloomington, Indiana: Xlibris, 2011). The author lives in Toronto, Canada.
