As Europe trembles on the edge of war, the protagonist, a French secret agent, is ordered to embed himself into the upper levels of the German government. A transformation, much like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, makes him a trusted and intimate favorite of Kaiser Wilhelm and his entourage. The novel illustrates Wilhelm's arduous efforts to bring Germany into the twentieth century and transform it into an economic and military powerhouse. For thirty years, Germany remained a peaceful nation "carrying a big stick" With deep psychological insight, the protagonist taps into the Kaiser's variant personality thereby providing the reader a view of Wilhelm's Job-like existence and the forces that lead him from a position of world respect to that of a hated warmonger. The protagonist faces a terrible quandary. After a decade of intimate service to the Kaiser and with but a few days until the Great War ends, the spy is ordered to capture the emperor or assassinate him. Quo Vadis? Testimonial "The author's extensive bibliography supports much of the novel's episodes" Lieutenant Colonel Monte L. Yoder, Chairman of Military Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Born a decade after the Armistice, the author became acquainted with many veterans. He listened intently to the Doughboy's tales, humorous and heart rending. The author has a B.S. in Social Science, an M.A. in History, a M.S. in Counseling Psychology, and a retired Fellow of The British Gemmological Association. After graduate school, he published numerous World War I articles. He currently has a military article awaiting publication. He served in the Korean Conflict. His family served in the Civil War, World War I and II. Several of his oil paintings hang in The South Carolina Military Museum in Greenville. Portraits of Generals Pershing, Foch and Haig are among them. In January 1995, Mr. Conrad received recognition as an "Honorary 'Buddy' Member" of the Veterans of World War I of the U.S.A. Inc.
