Synopsis

Modern M.D. medicine is simultaneously revered, reviled, deadly serious, and humorously lacking. Osteopathic medicine, despite its wonderful holistic philosophy is no different. Osteopathy is subject to the same reverences, revulsions, and humorous observations. The practitioners of every medical discipline are, after all, only human. This book of osteopathic wisdom and thoughts about medicine, in general, features quotes from some of osteopathy’s supporters, champions, and stars such as Andrew Taylor Still, Mark Twain, Andrew Weil, Edgar Cayce, and more.Although many of the quotes and thoughts are not from osteopathic physicians – nor even from ‘physicians’ for that matter, they are representative of what the author considers to be the essence of osteopathy – and the foibles of medicine.

À propos de l'auteur

Dr. Cohn received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1981. In 1986, he received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of Osteopathic Medicine & Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Cohn went on to do a traditional osteopathic internship at the Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater, Michigan – a Michigan State University-affiliated program. He subsequently received post-graduate training in Family Medicine & Biomechanics/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine through programs at Michigan State University, as well. For much of his career, Dr. Cohn was in a solo private practice in general medicine with special interest in the field of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and treatment of pain and neurologic and musculoskeletal injury. He was also the founder and chief medical legal consultant for 2 legal medicine consulting firms. He is also an award-winning author and has had his work published in professional journals. In addition to typical osteopathic medical training, Dr. Cohn has extensive knowledge and expertise in hands-on manipulative treatment and evaluation. He also places a great deal of emphasis on finding and treating the very subtle and often gradual changes in a person’s body which can lead to great pain and dysfunction. He emphasizes finding the root problem from which a person’s pain or health problem stems, rather than just treating the symptoms. Dr. Cohn has experienced a great deal of success in treating acute and chronic pain such as headaches, neck pain, upper and lower back pain, TMJ problems, musculoskeletal chest pain, chest-wall pain, post-surgical chest pain, failed-back syndrome (post-laminectomy or discectomy pain), and even structurally-induced neuropathic and radicular pain of the limbs. Dr. Cohn is also the author of numerous short stories including “Home-Sick” and the well-received “Misplaced Messiah,” as well as a book on parenting and the Osteopathy and the Zombie Apocalypse books for pre-medical/pre-college students and for laypeople. Dr. Cohn speaks to general audiences; high school, college and pre-medical students and pain patients introducing them to Osteopathic Medicine, principles, and practice. He works to enlighten patients, doctors, and other medical personnel about osteopathic medicine, in general, to encourage students to investigate osteopathy as a career choice, and to inform patients about alternative treatments, especially for chronic pain.
