Synopsis

God is the Architect of progress. God advances things always toward the better. If life on earth is good, Purgatory is better, and Heaven is surely the best. Purgatory is a step up, and Heaven is the peak. Jesus, rising from the tomb, and ascending to His Father’s Kingdom, is forever by His graces, drawing us to Himself to share in His victory and glory. When our dear ones die, we tend to be shattered by grief. If we could maintain any sentiment at all of the joys these dear ones are being drawn into, we would find it much easier to let go. By our tendency to cling to them for our own sake, we trigger our sense of loss. We might handle our grief more positively if we focused on desiring their benefit and happiness. Often pain and suffering precede our death. Few are the people who would consciously want a dear one to stay and continue suffering, rather than let go and let them pass on to the more wonderful life God has planned for them. We could even learn to rejoice in their good fortune, and hope to join them when our time on God’s calendar has come. To be in Heaven is to be enthralled with everyone there. We will never encounter someone who does not love us and enjoy our company. We ourselves will have been purified of every defect. We will treasure and love everyone we meet. And that will be constant and endless, to the furthest reaches of God’s immense universe. Every moment will be perfect and complete in itself. Life goes on in Heaven from perfect experience to flawless experience. Each event is its best possible, and one after another.

BIOGRAPHY—The author is a monk-priest at the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Entered religious life in 1944 as a Christian Brother of Ireland. Is a monk since 1959, a priest for 40 years, and a hermit from 1985-2005. Authored Don’t You Belong to Me? by Paulist Press; The Hermit Bird’s Song; Revelation: Two Views--the Scenic View and the Short-cut View; and Three Divine Mysteries—privately printed. Is a Spiritual Director since 1968, BA and STM degrees. Certified in Spiritual Direction and MBTI. Professor of theology and philosophy for 20 years; conducted parish missions and retreats in 1980’s. Does private and group spiritual direction at the Abbey.
