The forces their families, friendship, and others in the community exert on the three don't always work in harmony and they face limited freedom addressing issues large and small. The lives of the three and other various characters unfold in a tapestry of emotions and encounters as all attempt to deal with the demands of a restrictive faith that tolerates no loyal opposition. The book's characters – both within and outside the faith – meld and collide in a series of encounters that involve family, love, betrayal, and a quest for power and control.

Lawrence (just call him Larry) is a northern California native who, after a less than sterling level of achievement at a nearby community college eons ago, left home and joined the Navy before he could be forcibly conscripted and sent to Vietnam. Separation from the Navy found him completing his BA degree at San Diego State and getting married before receiving a commission in the Air Force and spending the next twelve years knocking around the skies of planet Earth. This decade-plus time frame also found the Pratt family joining an unexpectedly repressive faith and resigning their membership seven years later. Did someone break a mirror? Separating from the military in 1986, our novelist in the rough returned to the San Francisco Bay Area after an eighteen year absence with a wife, two children, and a master’s degree. A technical writer and trainer since that return, he has spent far too long stuffed into a cubicle at various firms in Silicon Valley dreaming of hitting the big time – the great American novel. Part of that dream has meant a lot of time spent in the minor leagues writing travel/local interest articles (one picked up by National Geographic) and short stories – some published but many not. Add to these efforts membership in the California Writers Club and attendance in numerous workshops, classes, and critique sessions. Dark Deception may or may not be that great novel, but it’s been a fun attempt. The book’s success will be determined by the reading public. While a work of fiction, the text draws from the author’s many first- and second-hand encounters with a variety of authoritarian institutions including the referenced branches of the military, two religious institutions and a handful of military contractors. The result is a thought-provoking and emotionally engaging fictional critique of such “tribes” and the impact they have on their members and society at large. Here’s hoping you enjoy reading Dark Deception as much as Larry enjoyed writing it.
