Synopsis

In Mortal Love, Rivka Keren raises fascinating and frightening questions. To what extent do we shape our lives? What happens when we ignore our fundamental nature? By posing these questions to a society that cherishes free will and self determination, Keren dares us to accompany her on an unflinching exploration of destiny, a journey which culminates in the terrifying realization that we may not have as much control over our lives as we like to think. Mortal Love traces five characters and the ways in which their lives are intertwined. This is the story of a charged and complicated relationship between Beno Gottzeit, his daughter Edna, son-in-law Zohar, painter-lover Margit, and Ilias, a Greek-Orthodox monk. The unexpected details of their lives unfold through fragments of memory and confession, revealing a history as intricate and fragile as an origami bird. The non-linear plot takes place in Hungary, Greece and Jerusalem, leaping back and forth in time and space, encompassing a number of perspectives. Mortal Love is a study in contradictions: it juxtaposes the best of intentions with the worst of circumstances, the most ebullient hope with the deepest despair. This is a story about memory, identity, evil, love, and most of all, destiny. “Unusual, compelling…a book of artistic and intellectual integrity… uplifting, cathartic experience of a Greek tragedy, as described by Aristotle…” Prof. Ziva Shamir, “Maariv” “A deep and challenging exploration of the devastating impact love has on five central figures…” Jeff Green, “Jerusalem Post”
