Synopsis

This Second Edition of the Herb Sampler expands the basic guide on a sampling of herbal topics with more information on the original topics, updated Webliography and Bibliography, and an Index. An excellent book for beginners and those looking for a little bit more. New to this edition is an Ingredients section. Herbs can be used to create ingredients that can be stored and used later. Information on making dried mixes such a taco seasoning without salt or other additives is provided. There are instructions for herbal vinegar, syrup, butter, oil and sugar. A Food-Herb Combination chart lists these by food or by herb making it easy to find what you want. There are some unique recipe offerings such as Cuckoo’s Foot Ale, Scarborough Faire Bread and Lavender Tea Biscuits plus the basic Pesto and Gazpacho as well. The crafting section includes making tussie-mussies (nosegays) with a reference chart on the Meanings of Flowers and Herbs. Other crafts are potpourri, sleep pillows and sachets or sweet bags. A few children’s projects are also included. Using herbs in the landscape covers interplanting (companion planting chart), hedges and ground covers. References now include a USDA Plant Hardiness Map and updated Webliography and Bibliography. The Useful Measurements page and the Common/Scientific Name pages return and an Index has been added.
