Born into a family of Methodists, William Joe Adusei, affectionately called Joe Adusei or Joe Adus, is the only member of his family of ten children, who opted for the Catholic Church at the age of 12, when he showed great interest in becoming a Catholic Priest. After his elementary school education, he joined the St Hubert Seminary in 1977 and opted for the missionary life of the Spiritans, i.e. the Holy Ghost Fathers. But in his fourth year in the seminary, he was to play a very influential role in what the students perceived to be injustices in the institution and went on a peaceful demonstration against the authorities in 1979. The seminary was temporarily closed down and a Commission was set to probe the case. Most of the students re-applied. But Joe Adusei in particular felt injustices and hypocrisy were at play and decided not to continue with the priesthood again though he still maintained his contact with his mates and the church. But as God would have it, he passed with distinction. But his challenges appeared to have just begun. The unfortunate incident at the seminary had now become known throughout the entire country and most of the schools would not have anything to do with ‘young militant priests’. So despite his good grades he had to struggle before being admitted into an all- girls school, i.e. St’ Louis Secondary School in Kumasi, Ghana, to do his sixth form (G.C.E ‘A’ Level). After his G.C.E. ‘A’ Level examinations in 1982, he stowed away with a friend to Abidjan just to live there and improve their communication skills in French. There were very eventful situations in the country then and there were even reports that he had died there. After a very eventful year stay he returned to Ghana and gained admission to the University of Ghana in 1984 where he pursued a 4-year combined course of Theater Arts and Kiswahili Literature and graduated in 1989. He later did his MA in Comparative Literature at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. He also holds Certificate in HIV Science Academy: Treatment Education from the African American HIV University, LA, USA; Certificate NGO Management (GIMPA, Accra, Ghana), and Certificate in Grassroots Communication in Rural Development (DSE/SPA).
