Margret Hansen is a vivacious twentyfouryearold living in Schwäbisch Hall, a small town in the south of Germany, in 1960. She functions in one of the town's nursery school. She lives with her grandmother and mother in a small house since her father's death during World War Ii. Her world is turned upside down when she starts a relationship with a goodlooking man from Nürnberg, who comes from a wellknown and wealthy family. When she falls pregnant, she faces many dilemmas and lifealtering decisions. As she struggles with her changing circumstances, she has to deal with her background in depth and feels torn between loyalty to her closest family and loving the growing baby inside her as she alternates between the romantic hope that her lover will indeed turn out to be her knight in shining armor on the one hand and utter despair on the other. She is standing by and leaning on her close friend through this difficult time. Margret has to deal with her radically changed future plans while feeling unaccepted and unloved-to such an extent that she cannot contemplate praying about her problems.
