Synopsis

The various nations of the American continent founded at the beginning of Modern era shared similar problems. These nations formed by the mass migration from the various parts of the world, welcomed the people who were not only outcasts from their ancestral homes but also strikingly differed in ethnicity, race, colour of skin and even in religion and creed. These newly founded nations had the herculean task of including these totally different people to the belonging of one nation and coordinate them in the building up of it. But among these when United States of America and Canada arose to progress, prosperity and good governance Latin America remained a place of poverty, destruction and utter chaos. It is the failure of a nation Marquez symbolically represents through the destruction of Macondo- a place erased from the surface of earth. Though the exodus made from various parts of the world in search of the promised land for a new beginning and a better life they cannot turn it into a place ‘flowing with milk and honey’ but remained a place where there is ‘weeping and gnashing of teeth’ – a place of utter failure and chaos. So this work enquires the cause of failure of a nation.
