Synopsis
An Introduction to Gas Discharges, Second Edition introduces the reader to the main aspects of gas discharge, from types of discharge and breakdown to equilibrium, plasma properties, and plasma measurements. Fundamental processes such as the absorption and emission of radiation are also examined. Some applications of gas discharge are given. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins with a historical background on gas discharges and an overview of three types of gas discharge: Townsend or dark discharge, glow discharge, and arc discharge. The discussion then turns to the fundamental processes involving individual particles of the gas, with particular emphasis on the kinetic theory of a simple gas, collisions, mobility, and diffusion as well as electrode effects. Subsequent chapters deal with breakdown, equilibrium, and plasma properties and measurements, along with the self-sustaining discharge. Some applications of gas discharge are considered, including lighting, heating, and power generation. This monograph will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers in physics and engineering.
