Synopsis

As I Recall is filled with 90 years of memories from the author’s life. An oh, what a life it’s been! Douglas Barman grew up in the Depression on a farm and in East St. Louis. Like many young men of his era, he served in the Army months after graduating from high school. Private Barman was in the Pacific Theatre during WWII as a machine gunner and barely escaped what was planned to be the largest amphibious assault. After he received his degree in geophysics, he spent his entire career with Texaco exploring for oil primarily in California and the Arctic. Together with his wife, Betsy, he raised seven children and had incredible experiences from skiing in the Alps to walking a portion of the Great Wall of China to dining with a future president to the United States. Here’s just a sampling of the stories inside … “Mr. Bahtee was more or less my constant companion. I never called him by his first name. Come to think of it, I don’t think he had one. There wasn’t anything special about him. Perhaps the only thing unusual about Mr. Bahtee was that no one could see him but me.” …“I was over at Konig’s Drug Store where they had a soda fountain. It was a Sunday afternoon. December 7, 1941. My life and that of every American took a detour that afternoon.” …“The music began and the four of us waltzed out there in our tutus, just like a group of ballerinas. But unlike ballerinas, we didn’t wear toe shoes. We wore combat boots and were four of the ugliest dancers to ever take the stage.” …“Because of my early work in Arctic geophysical exploration, I was invited to apply to join the Explorers Club in New York. Then I received another amazing invitation, to try out for NASA’s astronaut program.” … “A special project I took on gave me the opportunity to talk with our 37th president, Richard Nixon, and begin a friendship with the man who’d become our 41st president, George H.W. Bush.
