Armed with nothing more than a notebook, a press pass, and a camera, I began my quest where all baseball journeys eventually go; I went home. There, through the voices of the children that play this game in the rural valleys of Kentucky, I rediscovered the magic. I rediscovered why young hearts fall in love with the sport of summers, sand, and sod. But that wasn’t enough. I had to know if the love endured when the pressure mounted –when money, stats, and the best of the best entered the fray. I had to know the difficult roads that faced those who chased the dream, and why they kept going. I had to know what pulsed through the hearts of the professional baseball player. Downstream on the Ohio River, the answers awaited me. In the dugout, on the field, and within the press box of the Triple-A Louisville Bats, I found the stories untold. I found the sides unseen. I found that beneath the faces of the men that played this game or contributed to this game, there were boys –boys with dreams of a bigger stage. This book gives a glimpse into the human element we too often forget. This book gives a pulse to the heart of the game –its players. Part memoir, part journalistic exposé, Bats that Won’t Break provides, within its 45,000 words and 78 photographs, a snapshot of what lurks in baseball’s shadows. Framed by the voices of the children of the game, the crux of the book tells the stories of quintessential baseball men that otherwise may always exist in obscurity. The stories of four players (Corky Miller, Denis Phipps, Scott Carroll, and Danny Dorn), two coaches/former MLB veterans (David Bell and Ted Power), and two behind-the-scene contributors (Groundskeeper Tom Neilsen and radio announcer Matt Andrews) create eight separate human-interest pieces within a single cohesive narrative –the journey to find ourselves through baseball. It’s a journey for the baseball fan, young and old, validating the passion they placed in the pastime. It’s a journey for the skeptics and the statisticians, reminding them that human hearts and incredible narratives live within the names in the box score. It’s a journey for any reader in search of a book that chronicles the power of the human spirit, of perseverance, of chasing a seemingly impossible dream –and conquering it. Cory Collins is an up-and-coming sports and fiction writer from Vanceburg, KY. A May 2013 Graduate of Transylvania University in Kentucky, Collins has also written two novels, a feature-length screenplay, and a novella. His play, "Caroline," co-written with Cameron Lindsey was produced in December 2011.
