Synopsis

The geometry content of this unit aligns with CCSS Grade 6, including formulas for the area of two-dimensional polygons as well as formulas for the volume and surface area of prisms. The unit can be used alone as a supplement to any core curriculum to ensure that the CCSS Standards of Practice are being met. It also serves as an addition to the previously published Contexts for Learning Mathematics series (K-6), available from Heinemann Press, extending the original CFLM materials on number and operation to geometry. For more information on CFLM and available professional development visit www.newperspectivesonlearning.com.

À propos de l?auteur

Sylvia Glassco teaches middle school mathematics at the Ancona School in Chicago, IL. She seeks to empower her students to use their mathematical understanding to explore and shape the world; she and her students have presented locally on how classroom data investigations can lead to advocacy for social justice. As a presenter at the annual NCTM convention she shared strategies for fostering early proof writing. In addition to teaching, she is currently researching the potential of games, both physical and digital, in math education. Catherine Twomey Fosnot is the CEO of New Perspectives on Learning, LLC and the Founding Director of Mathematics in the City, a nationally recognized center for professional development at the City College of New York. She has authored and co-authored over 40 books and articles on mathematics education, most recently the Context for Learning Mathematics series (K-6) and the Young Mathematicians at Work series (K-8) with the accompanying professional development materials funded by NSF, published by Heinemann. She also serves as senior consultant for the award-winning internet math environment, Dreambox Learning (www.dreambox.com). The AERA SIG on Constructivism has twice awarded her their “significant contributor” award. She retired from CCNY in 2010 to devote her time to writing, consulting, and her four grandchildren.
