Synopsis

Seventeen year old Sammie Fagan must make a choice; run away and find Lydia, the only person who ever loved her, or keep hiding from her stepfather. Deciding to catch a bus to Childress, Texas, Sammie finds herself on the side of the road, puzzled by the drop-off, with no money and nowhere to go. She soon learns life is not turning out to be as she planned. Lydia is dead and Sammie is now living in the cellar of Lydia's husband, Cecil Bryan. Day by day she watches the events on the 1930s farm through cracks in the cellar door and the window of the farmhouse. As the days grow colder, she yearns to be inside with the father and son who occupy the house. Will Sammie be discovered and turned in as a run-away? Will she find happiness and a home where she can live with no fear? Or, will she be told to move on since Lydia is no longer there?
