Isaac Fishbourne is born in Lincolnshire on the same day as Isaac Newton. They separate for prep school but come together again at Cambridge. They are separated once more by the Black Plague. Newton retires to Lincolnshire to think. Fishbourne is sent by the Royal Society, of which his father is a founding member, to the island of Tortuga to study natural history.Isaac us an adventurer with some psychic connection to Isaac Newton, who occasionally appears in his dreams. On the Tortuga trip he rescues a friend of Henry Morgan and meets a woman who was sold into white slavery by her English father. Isaac saves his homeward bound ship from Carolina pirates with a physically possible but highly improbable cannon shot. He makes this shot after a Newton dream. This sets up the pattern for the book. Before each encounter with adversity Newton appears to him. What follows is a nearly impossible act which somehow succeeds. On a second expedition for the Royal Society, this time to counter French presence west of the Appalachians, Isaac is guided into the wilderness by the Indian woman who will become his wife. Each time he performs an unlikely feat she proclaims it the work of a guardian spirit. He believes he is just lucky. On this trip they meet the antagonist, a French trader residing with the Fox Indians. Isaac learns the trader is the man who brought his prostitute friend into slavery. The trader has the same plans for Isaac's future wife. Isaac and she make a daring escape from the Fox camp, possibly thanks to an Isaac Newton dream. The book reaches a climax back in Europe, with Morgan and the Tortuga whore playing important roles in battling the French trader. The prostitute is now a prominent London Madame. Isaac is sent by the Royal Society to France to attend a ceremony at the French Academy of Sciences. The Frenchman is in favor with Louis XIV, and plots Isaac's assassination. When the the plot fails the antagonist vows to enter England to kill Isaac, his wife, and the London Madame. They are warned of this by an unexpected source. The leads to the culmination of the conflict.
